Supposedly, she feared the king’s well known wrath should he find out her mistake.At the same time, at an abbey on the Welsh Marshes, known as Holyrood, murder most foul occurs again and again. The best Hugh Corbett adventure yet! Hugh and Randolph are called to Holyrood Abbey set in the Valley of the Shsdows in Wales. The two must solve bizarre murders of brothers who once served tbhe late King Edxward l in his slaughter of Welsh rebels who lived in the woods nearby. In no time at all the body count multplies as a mysterious satanic cult and Welsh rebels attack the abbey with fire and sword. One reviewer accused Daugherty of using too many adjectives, but in this case they are well used to create an atmosphere of suspense and dread. There is an abundance of action, weapons and gore but all is in keeping with moving along a very clever and twisting plot. I highly recommend this book! FYI: I usually keep a count how often Dougherty uses the phrsse " needle thin" instead of "narrow." This time it was only once. Is my count off?)
If you like Paul Doherty - it is among his best books - when it comes to English historical fictions - he is the best - 20 odd outings with Sir Hugh Corbett - and I cannot wait for the next one.
Once I started reading I was unable to put the book down. This is one of the most atmospheric Corbett novels. The pace is wonderful- it doesn’t let up throughout. If you like serious, believable mysteries, Corbett and Doherty are for you.
I have loved ALL the previous Corbett books, this one had to many adjectives! Wait until it goes on sale.
